Miscellaneous Ramblings

Twist & Shout

As usual, the event hotel managed to fill up with balloon artists days before the start of the convention. (...mysteriously, people in other professions just don't seem to understand the need for extending conferences...) Lanna Lee gave everyone a glimpse of the pre-conference fun in her Twist & Shout weblog.

The competitions, always a major draw, had a slightly different format this year. For the first time, the three fancy figure competitions were open to submissions and voting on three separate days. In past years, delivery of all competition entries and public voting took place at the same time; this made it really difficult to view and appreciate all sculptures.

The new competition format made it a bit easier for BHQ to bring the on-line audience comprehensive coverage of the action. (although the BHQ team of Mark, John, Debbie and Sarah still had their work cut out for them) The new format also seemed to pay off for the international crowd, judging by the large number of prizes taken by those from France and Canada.

We recently learned that the traditional pattern of alternating between T & Jam and Twist & Shout would be coming to an end. The T & Jam producer, Tom Myers, decided to leave the convention business in favor of a smaller traveling show. Thus, Twist & Shout attendees were happy to hear that it would become an annual event, with the 2005 convention happening in Austin. Balloon entertainers can look forward to revisiting the starting place of all this mayhem and also anticipate future conventions happening in new US locations.

Custom portfolios

BHQ portfolios were designed to be straightforward and easy to use. Upload your photos and they're ready to be viewed. No web design skills are needed. Until recently, you've been stuck with a limited number of layout options. For most people, that's perfectly satisfactory. But for others, greater control is desired.

We're happy to announce customizable BHQ portfolios that you can embed in your own web site. Expert web designers can use the power of the BHQ portfolio management and database software while having enormous control of the portfolio appearance. Your web site visitors will never know they're looking at a separately hosted portfolio.

Printing photos by retrieving your original uploads

Everyone that adds pictures to the BHQ photo database knows that our system automatically resizes images for display in web browsers. The images you submit get shrunk, to make it faster and easier for web surfers to view photos.

Many people don't realize that BHQ also archives your original photo. Now, when viewing your own photos, you'll see an additional link on the bottom of the page that allows you to download those originals from our archive. If you need to make prints, or otherwise make use of high resolution photos, you can get them from us as you need them. There's no need to maintain a separate archive on your home PC.

Of course, you'll only be able to download your own high resolution photos. You cannot download photos from other BHQ members.
