BHQ Column Editor Speaks Up
Larry is busy with Balloon Manor and Sheena is busy writing papers, so I get to insert my own 2 cents this month! When the bosses are away, the employees do play! And even though Sheena discussed this topic this last month, I think it deserves a second look.
For those who don't know me or recognize my name, I edit the montly BHQ Columns (which have been known to be a bit late the past few months, but that's another story for another column). My mission is to seek out new columnists with great ideas while continually prodding current column authors to continue sending us great materal.
What makes a good column?
If you've looked through our archives you'd see we have:
- "Recipe" or "How To" articles about creating specific sculptures. These take you step-by-step through the entire procedure, typically with photos. We have regular columnists in both the Twisting (Dewey, Michael Philo, Patricia Bunnell, etc.) and Decorator (Jan Iiams, Sue Marston-Weston, Linda Ferrell, etc.).
- Business related articles - stories about what works (or doesn't work) from people in the same business you are.
- Industry related articles - about the Balloon Industry and events effecting us.
- Performance articles - Many of our members and veiwers are performers and entertainers as well as twisters and decorators. Even if you're not a stage performer, many of the techniques and the tidbits of advice come in handy in real-life situations.
- "Other" Articles - We just don't know what category to put Scott Tripp and Mike Kenyon, but we look forward to their articles anyway!
What makes a good columnist?
- Someone with ideas, creativity, or a mind full of ideas and thoughts they'd like to share with the rest of the Balloon Community. If you have an innovative or creative new use of balloons (decorator, twisting or a combination of both) and you have a decent digital camera, consider writing up a description of your idea. Sharing means growth, and growth means prosperity.
- If you see someone in the BHQ Forums who has a lot of strong opinions about anything balloon related *cough*Carmen*cough*, they should be organizing their thoughts into monthly columns. We don't have to agree with their opinions, but they can lead to open discourse and new understanding and further advancement in our industry.
So if you have something you'd like to share, or you know of someone out there that should be writing for us, send them our way. Send emails to editor@balloonhq.com.
