BHQ at Balloon Summer Camp 2005

This year Debbie Piotrowski and John Barthelmes from BalloonHQ attended Balloon Summer Camp 2005 in Las Vegas, NV from August 7 through 10. They were there to cover the event and post photos and details online (see the link below). For the third year in a row, coverage of Summer Camp included support for online voting in the competitions. This is one way that BHQ members at home can take part and feel like they're attending the convention. Our staff also had a great time speaking with all the artists and students and enjoyed all the beautiful decorations!

Each meal provided by Balloon Summer Camp was decorated in different holiday styles to help distributers to show up their stock. Between several breakfasts and lunches we had the chance to celebrate Valentine's Day, New Years Eve, Christmas and other holidays. Each evening met the campers with a specific themed celebration, beautifully decorated and full of entertainment. The first evening included a camper talent show, set with a summer camp theme. Campers danced and had fun at a 50s Sock Hop the second evening. Final night festivities brought campers to a luau complete with dancers, a steel drum band, and live tropical birds!

Students learned a lot during the day as well. Classes and seminars taught by many industry leaders were very informative and educational. Campers also showed off their own talents in several competitions. All the entries and winners can be found at the link below.

Dave Scott and his crew should be applauded for all the hard work they did to make such a smooth running convention.

For complete photo coverage and to see the winning competition entries from Lea Beck (small sculpture - round), Rebecca Kanar (small sculpture - non-round), Steve Jones (large sculpture), and Carmen Ballering (centerpiece), visit the Balloon Summer Camp 2005 section of the BHQ Photo Pages. (Linda Kiss took first place in the portfolio competition, but that's not pictured on BHQ.)

BHQ and RSS Feeds

The tech savvy users of BHQ have undoubtedly noticed the recent craze of RSS, or web feeds, on news and blog-oriented sites. Several people have even written and asked if BHQ had plans to introduce these services. Others may have stumbled across terms like RSS, blogs, and podcasting in the news and wondered what it was all about. The short answer is that RSS (and a similar service called Atom) are ways of delivering updates on web sites to you more easily than requiring you to always visit the sites you're interested in. We've been doing experiments with these for a little while now.

We held off announcing this due to the confusion we were sure we'd create. While those following the tech world have been seeing things like RSS and Atom for several years, it's only now that these methods of sharing information are really reaching everyone else. Starting next month, the BHQ forums, new photos, upcoming events, and BHQ classifieds will all be available as RSS feeds. These very columns that you're reading now will also be availlble so your web browser can tell you when the new columns have been placed online.

You may be wondering why we're announcing this now since we were worried about confusing people. The requests have been coming in slowly, indicating that this technology is reaching critical mass. But more importantly, one of our columnists, Mike Kenyon, submitted a two part column this month. Part one is online in the same form as always. Part two is an audio recording, a podcast, to accompany the text. If you don't know what that means, don't worry. Read Mike's column. You'll see a link to download the audio file, or to subscribe to this and future audio files of Mike's as a podcast if you have the appropriate software. (Not having special software doesn't mean you'll be left out. We aren't taking away any of the old stuff we offer. You'll still have access to all the same stuff in all of the old ways. These new RSS feeds are just a new way of getting the information to you if you so desire.) Mike asked to be the first to offer this to all of you. So we'll let him and we'll give more information on the other BHQ feeds in October.
