Spidey Man

by Ralph Dewey

At the 2003 Joey To The World Gospel Clown Convention in Houston, Texas I met Glynn Garner. He showed me an easy Spiderman parody. I loved the simplicity of his creation. When doing restaurant work or line work, quickness is essential. Below is Glynn’s version. I appreciate his willingness to share. Spidey directions

I decided that adding a second loop around the waist would make the parody look a little better. My modification caused the arms to be shorter and thus made the arms and legs more proportional. Here is how to make the Spideyman parody balloon.

You will need only three balloons, one red 6″ heart balloon, one red #260 balloon and one blue #260 balloon. Begin by fully inflating the red #260 balloon. Burp it a couple of times to make it soft, then tie off the nozzle. Fold the balloon in half. At a point 6 inches from the center of the balloon, twist off a bubble. You now have a loop in the center of the balloon. Spidey directions

Form the hands on each end of the balloon. That is, twist off a 1-1/2″ bubble and a 4″ bubble. Fold-twist the 4″ bubbles. Curve the arms up slightly. Spidey directionsSpidey directions

Take the blue #260 balloon and fully inflate it. Burp it a couple of times to make it soft, then tie off the nozzle. Fold the balloon in half. At a point 6 inches from the center of the balloon, twist off a bubble. That forms a loop in the center of the balloon. Spidey directions

Place the center loop of the red balloon into the center loop of the blue balloon. Spidey directions

One at a time, place the ends of the blue balloon over the red balloon and through the center loop of the blue balloon. Spidey directionsSpidey directions

The head is made from a red 6″ heart balloon. Inflate it to about 4-1/2 inches while holding one of the lobes to keep it from inflating. Tie the knot of the heart balloon to the neck area at the twist in the back (see back view photo) then position it between the arms. Spidey directionsSpidey directions

To form the feet, bend the ends of the blue balloon about 45 degrees to the sides. Decorate the face and you are finished with Spidey Man. Spidey directions

Variations
I took the basic design and made it out of white and gold balloons. I added a set of wings and a halo from several yellow #160 balloons to make a praising angel. With a little more modification, you can make a fairly easy Bob the Builder parody too. Angel PraisingBob The Builder parody
