Cow Hat
by Ralph Dewey
The BHQ challenge this month is a cow or cow hat.
Making the Hat
Balloons needed: 1 pink 6″ heart, 2 white #260, 1 brown #260 and 1 black #160.
Start making the cow’s head by inflating a white #260 balloon fully except for about 4″. Tie off the nozzle. Twist off two 1″ bubbles (the top of the cow’s head) and ear twist (pinch twist) them. Twist off two 5″ bubbles and twist connect them together. Twist off two more 5″ bubbles and twist connect them. Push one set of the 5″ bubbles through the other set to form a “football” shape. Trade places with two of the 5″ bubbles by rolling them. This will lock the four 5″ bubbles together. Deflate and tie off and any remaining balloon.
Make the cow’s muzzle. Inflate a pink 6″ heart balloon to about 75% and tie off the nozzle. Twist off a 1-1/2″ bubble on the nozzle end. Push it through the “football” shape at the bottom to join the two balloons.
Make a soft 5″ bubble (the ear) from a brown #260 balloon and fold the ends together and tie them. Leave about 1″ of uninflated balloon for tying purposes later. Make another ear in the same way. Place an ear on both sides of the cow’s head and feed the 1″ uninflated ends through the center of the cow’s head and tie them.
Make a soft 8″ section of balloon from a black #160 (the cow’s horns) and twist it in half. Twist-connect the center of the horns to the two 1″ ear twist bubbles at the top of the cow’s head. Curve the horns upward.
Make the hat base from a white #260 balloon. Inflate the #260 fully except for about 1″ and tie off the nozzle. Twist off a 1/2″ bubble and two 14″ bubbles Twist-connect the last two 14″ bubbles together to form a head band.
Connect the cow’s head to the head band by connecting the 1-1/2″ bubble of the heart balloon (the muzzle) between the two 14″ bubbles. Wrap the nipple end of the white hat base around the two 1″ ear twist bubbles at the top of the cow’s head. Mark the eyes, nostrils and mouth to complete the cow hat.
